Han Zheng, present at 2019 global World Environment Day celebrations, reads out President Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter and gives a keynote speech

Han Zheng, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and Chinese Vice Premier, attended a global celebration to mark the 2019 World Environment Day in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on June 5 and made a keynote speech.

Han first read out President Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter and stressed the importance the Chinese government had attached to the event. The World Environment Day celebrations have been the world’s biggest and most widespread environmental protection campaign. Zhejiang Province, where the global event was held, is the place where President Xi initiated and practiced the conviction that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”. The event was meaningful and significant in improving people’s awareness of environmental protection and pushing forward the global environmental protection. The event themed “beat air pollution” showed people’s urgent needs and resolution to improve the air quality.

Han said that there is only one earth for the mankind and the whole human society is a community of common destiny when facing the ecological environment challenges. China will cooperate with other countries to cope with global environmental and ecological issues. Han put forward the following four initiatives: share pollution control experience to improve regional and global environment quality; uphold the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities” to cope with the global climate changes; expand cooperation on biodiversity protection to control the decrease of biodiversity; make joint efforts in environmental construction with "Belt and Road" countries so as to promote global sustainable development.

Joyce Msuya, deputy executive director of UN Environment, attended the event and read the congratulatory letter of UN Secretary-general António Guterres. Over 1,100 representatives of governments, enterprises, social organizations and the public participated in the event.
