Head of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment Shou Ziqi led a team for surprise check over VOCs emission companies in the Pudong New Area on May 28. The examined were two furniture making firms, one ship making firm and one motor vehicle emission inspection institution. The check aims to enhance work for company treatment in the sector and solve the problem of air pollution.
The temperature rises in the summer and work to prevent and treat ozone pollution has been increasingly severe. To guarantee the existing outcome of air quality, the bureau kicked off the campaign to carry out citywide checks for VOCs companies. For the furniture companies, the check focused on the airtight collection of the waste gas after painting, the building and operation of cleaning equipment and the water-based paint replacement for solvent-based paint. The check team has kept evidence and record of the breaches. For the ship making unit, the team paid special attention to the painting area and asked about the use amount of painting, the proportion of paint use in open space, current VOCs treatment and progress on craft improvement, environmentally- friendly manufacturing and the replacement use of water-based paint.
Shou indicated in the checks that VOCs treatment is significant to fighting ozone pollution and improving the city’s air quality and we should realize that it remains a tough challenge to win the battle with lasting difficulties to crack down on. Law enforcement will be intensified targeting VOCs treatment. Officials will lead the checks more often and punish companies with violations with a firm hand according to law; higher demands will be raised on VOCs treatment with detailed policies and regulations for better management level while updated technical support and services will be provided to enterprises for VOCs treatment.
