On the morning of March 17, Cheng Peng, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Director of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, led a team to visit China Baowu Steel Group Corporation Limited to assist the company in peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. Zou Jixin, member of the standing committee of the Party Committee of China Baowu Group, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (Baosteel), attended the discussion.
Cheng Peng pointed out that as an energy-intensive industry, the steel industry is a major carbon emitter, and urgently needs to explore new ways of green, low-carbon and circular development under the guidance of new development concepts, so as to strengthen technological innovation, transformation and upgrading, and accelerate the overall greening of products, resources and processes. Baowu took the lead in proposing the goal and path to achieve the peaking of carbon dioxide emissions in advance, setting a benchmark for central enterprises and local state-owned enterprises in Shanghai, and demonstrating its responsibility of practicing the concept of green development and promoting the construction of ecological civilization, which has greatly promoted Shanghai’s coordinated efforts to address climate change and strengthen ecological and environmental protection.
Cheng Peng emphasized that the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment will earnestly implement the spirit of the important instructions of General Secretary Jinping on peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, and in accordance with the decision and deployment of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal People’s Government, work closely with China Baowu Group, strengthen technical exchanges and policy guidance, and provide support services in various aspects together with the relevant departments of Shanghai, joining hands to advance Shanghai’s actions to reduce carbon emissions.
